Well… We’re here!
After a rather laborious first few days, we’ve finally
arrived. Let me sum up the craziness that has been going on to get us here.
July 4th: We showed up at the airport on time and
found that our flight had been cancelled. Originally, when we started remaking
plans we thought we wouldn’t get here until Monday night because so many of the
flights were booked up. After that, we realized we could split the group into
two and get here by Sunday night on two different flights, so that’s what we
planned. Our first group would come on July 5th, arriving in Boise
at 11:00pm, spend the night in a hotel in Boise and meet the second group the
next day. The second group would come in on Sunday morning.
July 5th: Providentially, the plans worked this
time. Group one arrived in Boise without a hitch and settled down at the
Hampton to catch a few z’s.
July 6th: Group one went to Walmart at 10:30 and
did most of the shopping for the trip so as to expedite the process. While
there, group two flew into Boise and drove to Walmart to meet us. We all took a
guess at how much the food and supplies would cost and Clint Tees won. His
reward? He’ll get to buy himself a milkshake… or to be more accurate, he
doesn’t have to buy someone else a milkshake and, instead, save his money.
After Walmart we made our way to Carl’s Jr./Green Burrito for lunch before
heading into the mountains, and Riggins.
At Carl’s Jr, We met a man who had lived in McCall (the
closest town to Riggins) who was a flight surgeon in Vietnam and now holds a
private practice for family care. He really encouraged our team and
complemented us on the maturity of the group. It just goes to show that you
never really know how people perceive you, because I would say that that lunch
was one of this group’s sillier moments.
After lunch we made the drive up to Riggins. Once there we
unpacked, had dinner, caught up with Pastor Jim and Mrs. Judy, and set to work
getting ready for VBS. Since we lost two days of prep we worked into the night,
finishing up around midnight.
July 7th: Today, VBS is underway. As I write
this, the music team is on the stage leading the kids in song, the rec team is
playing “On the Beach,” the crafts team is folding paper, and the teachers are
teaching on Jesus’ healing of ten lepers. We had thirty kids register today,
which is pretty standard for the first day of VBS here. Pray that we will reach
these kids in an authentic and fun way and that they will learn something and
bring their friends tomorrow!
Stay tuned tomorrow for an update on how our time with the
teens went. Stories will start coming and we need someone to tell them to!
As always,
For HIM and only HIM,
1 Thess 4:11
